Thousands evacuated as Bangladesh braces for severe Cyclone Remal

ActionAid is concerned about and closely monitoring the developing situation of Cyclone Remal, which is expected to make landfall in Bangladesh around midnight on 26 May. The severe cyclone is forecast to bring torrential rains, storm surges, and destructive winds, posing a significant threat to coastal communities and displacing thousands of people.

In response, ActionAid has activated its emergency response plan and allocated funding support for preparedness activities, including shelter and food.  Approximately 4,000 youth volunteers and 300 staff have been deployed to provide humanitarian support in the Rohingya Refugee camps for household and community-level preparedness.

Authorities anticipate that the cyclone is likely to continue to move nearly northwards and cross Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal coasts between Sagar Island and Khepupara, close to southwest of Mongla (Bangladesh) at a sustained wind speed of between 110-120 kmph gusting to 135 kmph.

This is a stark reminder of the urgency of addressing the climate crisis and supporting countries like Bangladesh that bear the brunt of its impact despite contributing the least. It is high time the world’s biggest polluters take responsibility to stop fanning the causes of the climate crisis and fill the loss and damage fund to ensure that frontline communities have the resources they need to avert climate disasters and recover and rebuild in instances such as this.”

“With landfall expected at midnight, communities most at risk are being urgently evacuated to shelters. We're providing dry food for immediate needs, but time is short. Many will be asleep and unaware of the danger. We're working tirelessly with women, youth, persons with disabilities, and all marginalised groups to ensure their evacuation and safety before the storm hits.”
